Past perfect

Do I have to use the past perfect in the following sentence? The girl smiled because I gave her a gift. OR The girl smiled because I had given her a gift.

Because of the proximity of time (I assume) of the two actions, I think the simple past would be o.k. I, myself, would use the past perfect.

I thought both are acceptable and that the former sounds more natural.
