Past Perf. or Past Simple?

He got angry, because I got a bad mark
He got angry, because I had got a bad mark
Which of these two sente?es is correct? I guess that the second one, but my friend argues that I mustn't use past perfect here.
Thank you.

Hi,
Neither is good: the comma before because is redundant, and it is not considered good style to use the same

word twice in a sentence (in your case -- got). Also, you didn't place a period at the end of your sentences.

He became angry because I got a low / poor mark.

He became angry because I had *got a low / poor mark. *Gotten is used in Amer
