Past Participle

So I have been very confuse and misguide about past participle for awhile now.

I understand that the principal verb part are:
Present: talk
Present Participle: talking
Past: talked
Past Participle: talked

However, I have always assumed that the past and past participle = past verb tense. It was just recently when I was trying to learn passive construction that I started to question this.

As I learn more, I am starting to understand; however, the more I learn, the more question I have.

Here are a few question I would like to clarify:

1. What is the different between past verb tense and the past and past participle? Do they not both show passage of time? I know the tense does but does the -ed participle?

2. Is the verb of a past participle of a passive construction the same acting the same as the verb of a tense? (Tense? Person? Number? Mood? and even voice?)

There are so much more question I want to ask but I need to know that I understand the basic principles of the past participle before I can move forward.

The third form or past participle and second form or past tense of regular verbs look exactly the same - talked, inteviewed ; irregular verbs may have different forms sung/sang, gone/went. The past participle is used: 1. With HAVE to form perfect aspects: I have interviewed - he had interviewed, 2.

No. The past participle does not in itself show anything about time. It is only when the past participle is used together with an auxiliary verb that the time (tense) is known.
