Past or present tense?

They pass their examination with flying colours.

Can I use present tense in this sentence or should I use past tense only? Thank you.

Without knowing the context it is not possible to say which tense you should use. The present tense might be used in a variety of circumstances, such as: - a narrative in the historical present - a commentary on what is being observed (as in a news report) - when describing what habitually or typically happens
