Past of present tense

Everybody in the wedding party _____ happy. (looks/looked)

Please tell me which is the more suitable word to fit this sentence.
My teacher said that looks is correct but I don't think so. "The wedding party" is more likely to have happened in the past.

It depends on the context. If the verbs around this sentence are mainly in the past, I'd use looked , with the exception of the case when you want to make the situation more vivid, by bringing it to the present with looks.

Hi Marius Hancu. Thank you for your answer.
The problem here is that this sentence comes alone, with no context around it (a single question).
In that case, what tense is more suitable?

Hi,

Consider

Mary lives in China.

Mary lived in China.

Which tense is more suitable?

The answer is that it simply depends on what meaning you wish to convey. Where no context is available, either should be considered correct.

It's the same with your 'wedding party' example.

Best wishes, Clive
