Can one say:

Thank you very much Alphecca Star.

But if I say:

3-He was reading the best book I wrote.

would that not correspond to"

4-He was reading the best books I have written,
and not to
5-He was reading the best book I had written.

Gratefully,
Navi.

3-He was reading the best book I wrote.
4-He was reading the best book I have written.
5-He was reading the best book I had written.

There is no real difference in meaning. Perhaps native speakers would prefer # 4 if they are still writing more books, and # 5 if they have retired as an author, but even that is speculation.

4-He was reading the best book s I have written,

5-He was reading the best book I had written.
Not the way I see it. It would not correspond that way at all. Not i

Thank you both very much,

I am not sure I understand and I think the reason is that my question is unclear. I will rephrase it if I may:

a-He was reading the best book I had written. Since then I have written better ones.
a1-He was reading the best book I wrote. Since then I have written better one

a-He was reading the best book I had (ever) written. Since then I have written better ones. Good.
a1-He was reading the best book I wrote. Since then I have written better ones. Not as good as the previous one. I assume the intent was for this to have the same meaning as the previous one.

Thank you very much CalifJim,

Actually, that was my point! I really thought one absolutely needed the perfect tenses. You are more leniant towards the simple past than I am!

Cheers!
Navi.
