anonymousAlso, I believe that "would" in the conversation is a conditional would used as a softener. What about this? Are these conditional woulds used as a softener as well?Would you mind opening the door? (maybe it means would you mind if I asked you to open the door?)Would you like some ice? (maybe it means would you like it if I offered you some ice?)

Yes.

Thank you, CJ. So personally which conversation would you use? The first one or the second one? A lot of people say that the response of "You would have to go to building 400." to the question of "Where would I go to get an ID replaced?" is wrong. They say the response should just be "building 400.". What do you think? It wouldn't sound weird to use "you would have to go to building 400.", right?

When it comes to choices like this, sometimes people just choose a way of saying things that depends on the mood they're in, so there's no magic formula that you have to learn in order to be successful at using these kinds of expressions.
