Past continuous vs Simple Past

On 14 November 1998, Peter Hillary, Eric Phillips and Jon Muir ---- across the enormous continent of Antarctica

A) were walking
B) have walked
C) walked
D) are walking
E) have been walking

"A" and "C" seem equally correct with different shades of meaning. How would you substantiate one's validity over the other? Do both choices work equally correctly?
