Past continuous vs Present perfect continuous

The church bell ....... all day.
1. was ringing
2. has been ringing

To me, this is a bad, subjective test because I believe, depending on context, both are correct. If the bell has finally stopped but was going for hours, then #1 would be correct. If it is still ringing, then I go with #2. What do you think?

Yes, I agree. These also work: will have been ringing, rang, might have rung, etc.
