Past continuous tense and past perfect tense

I looked everywhere, but she had gone. "Looked" is simple past. "She had gone" is past perfect. She went before I looked.

She said she was looking for an apartment. "Said" is simple past. "She was looking" is past continuous. She was looking continuously at some time in the past.
