Past continuous and past perfect continuous

Hi

What is the differences between these two sentences.

1) He was watching TV one day in 1969 when he saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

2) He had been watching TV one day in 1969 and saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

I know that sentence 1 is correct but I think sentence 2 is also correct. My English teacher said it wasn't but couldn't explain why.

Could someone explain why sentence 2 is not possible please

Thanks

Djx I think sentence 2 is also correct. It is not correct unless the sentence also references another, later past event.
