Past continuous?

Hello teachers,
I'd like to know if the following sentence is gramatically OK.

John was trembling though he slept under three blankets and the window wasn't even opened.
If not, would it be better to write 'John was trembling though he was sleeping under three blankets and the window wasn't even opened.'
If both are gramatically OK, would the second sentence mean that this is happening at the same time?
I am confused... I am sorry.

I do know that there have been a lot of questions about the usage of this tense but I am just not sure where else am I supposed to put/ post it.
Thanks in advance!
