Grammar

Past continuous ?

i.e. 1. Last summer I traveled through China.
2 . Last summer I was traveling through China.

In my textbook, it give a paraphrase of each sentence's meaning as follows,
1. for some time during the summer
2. throughout the summer

However, does it seem contradictory of the past continuous use in such examples?
e.g. The boy was coughing all night long. (the action which is repeated for some time in the past)

How can I accept the first two sentence's difference? or else the textbook might be wrong, I hope.

Top answer

The textbook is wrong. 1. The travel could have been part or all of the summer.
