Past continuous

Is it correct to say:

I was living in Brazil last year.
I was playing golf yesterday.

past continuous + last year, yesterday etc., not exact time e.g. 12 pm

Yes, both are fine. But the last would make more sense with a clause.

I think both really function as clauses rather than stand alone sentences.

I was living lived in Brazil last year.

I was playing played golf yesterday.

or

I was living in Brazil last year, when the hurricane hit.

I was playing golf yesterday, when all of a sudden a squirrel darted out of a hole and ran up my leg.

Actually, you can use them as stand-alone sentences, but you are right in that they almost imply that something else is about to be said in addition.
