Past continous / simple

Hi,
do the tenses fit in the following sentence, please?

For the last half an hour, he was talking about his hobbies while I was desperately trying to find somebody else.

Could we replace the continous tenses with the simple tense?

However, what if I change the sentence like this?

For the last half an hour, he was telling/told me his whole life story while I was desperately trying to find somebody else.

Which tense should I use? What if he told me his whole story within that half an hour? Then I should use the simple tense, right? I'm puzzled by this topic. Ple
