Past Cont. & Past Simple

One day I heard in a song: Well, it burnt while I cried...
Why was it sung so?
But she had to sing: Well, it was burning while I was crying...
Because we have 'while' and need to write with Past. Cont.
Thank you.

No. This is a misconception. The simple past can be used after "while". My favorite example is this:

Likewise,

Peter watched TV while Melissa washed the dishes.
