Past Before the Past

I sometimes get confused by the 'past before the past'.

Are these correct?

Yesterday I made a trip to the supermarket when Vicky arrived.
(= means that I headed for the supermarket upon Vicky's arrival)

Yesterday I had made a trip to the supermarket when Vicky arrived.
(= means that I had already been to the supermarket and back by the time Vicky arrived)

I believe that 'had' could be a substitute for the word 'already'.

Thanks - and have a nice day.
