Past and present tense

Dear teachers, I am confused about using tenses in writing a paragraph. Can I have both present and past tense in a paragraph or a sentence?

For example, I want to describe a cake that I tasted last week, I want to describe how it looked and tasted.. So should I use present tense because they are facts, or should I use past tense because the event happened last week?

Thank you

I believe you should be using past tense becaise you are describing a past event. I ate a pice of cake last week. It tasted wonderful.
