Past and present in the same sentence

Hi Friends,

He wanted to convince everyone that age was not an issue when it came to love.

He wanted to convince everyone that age is not an issue when it comes to love.

In the first sentence, it is consistently past tense. But in the second, it is a mixture of past and present. Is that acceptable?

Thanks.
