In writing can you start the first paragraph in present tense to tell your facts then switch to past tense in the body to tell your story?

I don't like the word laid...but i'm not sure which one fits the best. I looked them up and still can't decide on what to use. They just don't sound right.

Lay-laid-laid is simply wrong vocabulary. It is a transitive verb. The intransitive verb Lie-lay-lain is correct and appropriate here.
