Past

Hello, I would like to ask whether the past simple or past continuous is correct in the following sentences.

We were very frightened. He did not breathe/was not breathing.
After the accident he did not move/was not moving.

Or are both tenses possible in these sentences?

Thank you

If they're all related, I would say: We were very frightened because he wasn't breathing or moving after the accident.

And what if they were not related?

I'd use the continuous tense in these sentences.
