Passivity

Hi
What's the difference between passivity and inactivity?

'Black's "Bad Bishop" is hopelessly blocked by its own pawns and reduced to inactivity.'

Thanks in advance

soheil1 What's the difference between passivity and inactivity? Passivity means without any active response/effect/force. In chess, if the Bishop has very less scope or it can be moved to just a few squares, without countering/defending the opponent's pieces it is said to be a passive piece.

  • We can make it active sooner or later in the game.
  • Eg: A Knight at the corner is a passive piece whereas a Knight at the center of the board with a strong attack/defense is an active piece.
