Passives and reflexives

Ok so I've been asked for
homework to explain why the two sentences below are ungrammatical

*himselfi was praised by Dadi.

*Dadi praised himi.

In my answer I also have to
make references to the correct examples below

a. Dad praised Steven.

b.Steven was praised by Dad.

c.Dad praised himself.

So I know this is
to do with hierarchy and passives and
reflexives but I really don’t know where to start, any advices guys?

I think they want you to point out that reflexives can't be in subject position and that they are always used instead of their non-reflexive counterparts when they have the same referent as the subject of the same clause. Thus: Dad praised Dad cannot be rendered by Dad praised him . It has to be Dad praised himself .

  • Thus: Dad praised Dad cannot be rendered by Dad praised him .
  • It has to be Dad praised himself .
  • Dad praised Steven cannot be rendered by Dad praised himself .
  • It has to be Dad praised him .
