Passive/a lot of

Can one say:
1-Not a lot of books were bought by us.
2-A lot books were not bought by us.

Meaning:
We did not buy a lot of books.

This seems really simple, but I am confused! .
2 seems to be saying that a lot of books were bought by people other than us.
I am not sure 1 works either, although technically it seems correct. I don't know why it sounds a bit strange to me.

Gratefully,
Navi.

The passive in the first place is unnatural with pronouns, so it makes both sentences seem wrong.

Thanks a lot Mr. Micawber.

How about:
a-Not a lot of books were bought on that day.

Is that fine?

Navi.

Yes, that sounds much better. Sales were down.
