Passive voice confusion.

The letter is received.
The letter has been received.

What is the difference between these two sentences.

Both of your sentences are grammatically correct, but I can't imagine using the first in conversation or writing.

The second is natural (but formal).
The letter has been received. / The letter was received.

The active voice is better in business correspondence.
We (have) received your letter.
