Passive voice...

Hi everyone,

I have just found a example of the word 'alter' from dictionary and I have a question with that example.

The example:

The city has altered almost out of recognition since I left there five years old.

But I do not understand why the dictionary used 'has altered'?

Why don't use has been altered?

Thanks

winmanlai The city has altered almost out of recognition since I left there five years old. Hi, I believe we can express the intended meaning either passively or actively and still allow the meaning to come across. But this sentence has hit me as one that makes people frown in my opinion.

  • winmanlai The city has altered almost out of recognition since I left there five years old.
  • Hi, I believe we can express the intended meaning either passively or actively and still allow the meaning to come across.
  • But this sentence has hit me as one that makes people frown in my opinion.
  • First, "altered" may not be the best choice of word for the context.
  • If I could guess the intended meaning, It may try to say: Actively -The city has changed /transformed beyond recogition since I left when I was 5 years old.
