Dear members

Millions of pound's worth of damage has been caused by a storm which swept across the North of England last night.

The river Han burst its banks after heavy rain.

Many people were rescued from the flood s by fire-fighters, who received hundreds of calls for help.

Wind speed reached ninety miles an hour in some places.

Roads were blocked by fallen trees, and electricity lines were brought down, leaving thousands of homes without electricity.

"Everything possible is being done to get things back to normal." a spokesman said.

By the way, there should only be one period in the last sentence, at the end.

If the event happened 'last night', no damage estimate would be possible until after the rescue effort had concluded and the damage had been surveyed.

The original sentence was grammatically correct. An initial damage estimate as vague as the one given is possible minutes after the event.
