This may not be "grammatically" correct. I understand, speak, and write English perfectly, I have for 43 years. But I am ignorant in English Mechanics.

1. He wrote me. (A letter being implied)
1. He wrote to me. (People don't write road signs, letters are assumed)
1. He wrote me a letter.

The form is not passive, but past tense - something that already happened.

Bryan MontfordPassive voice, as might be used writing a story? He writes me.He writes to me.He writes a letter to me.
These are present simple tense, active voice.

A letter is written to me by him.
This is a correctly formed passive-voice sentence, but is unlikely to be heard/seen.

Ah, English mechanics.. my Arch Nemesis. It truly sucks being an illiterate American. And being a professional writer too. But, this is why writers are paid to write, and hire editors. Editors don't get paid to write, they get paid to edit. Thank you Jon!

Note:

sleep is intransitive. Therefore, it has no passive. Lucy slept.

find is transitive. Therefore, it has one passive. Lucy found the letter. / The letter was found by Lucy.

write is ditransitive. Therefore, it has two passives

Is the use of simple present OK here as there is "a letter"?

I think present progressive sounds better.

As an exercise in transforming active to passive, changing a simple tense to a continuous (progressive) tense would be wrong. Those who invent these exercises seldom stop to think about the possible awkwardness of the resulting sentences. They are somewhat self-delusional in believing that h

I think a good start is to use real passive sentences found in newspapers, magazines, and books, instead of artificial exercises.

It should also be made clear to the student that not every sentence in the world has a passive voice version. We get so many questions
