Passive form

Is the following sentence correct? If not, why?

When the Director arrived back at his house, he was already being waited by Judith Salway.

Top answer

No, I'd use the active voice: When the Director arrived back at his house, Judith Salway had already been waiting for him . I don't know why your sentence is incorrect as I'm not a native. :-)

The underlined part is incorrect since wait requires a preposition: I am waiting for him. Adding the preposition would make the sentence technically correct but in my opinion it would be rather awkward and I doubt any native speaker would utter it. I certainly wouldn't.[N]
