Passive clause

A long time ago when my grandfather was alive our family was driven out of it's home.

Is this sentence one main clause, or can it be split up into individual ones?

Well i dont think that you can split it up because i can't find any subordinate conjuntions, however i think it looks right with a comma after alive. Then again, if a comma can go there why doesn't the example have one already?
