Interviewing a car racer: How does our passion for racing start? (Is this natural? Is there another way of asking?)

racer: My father used to take me to a racetrack in my homestate when I was a kid and that's how my passion develop (Is this verb correctly used?)

I would still put the question in the past tense.

If you want to use the present tense then the question has to appear to be more general:

How does a passion for racing start?

The interviewee would then start with
