Passion a la Gummidge

Hello everybody.
I am reading 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott chapter 41.

throwing cold water over his
passion a la Gummidge—and an irresistable laugh spoiled
the pensive picture he was endeavoring to paint.

Would you please tell me what the above imply, I know Mrs Gummidge, but I don't know who behaves like her, Jo or Laurie? I mean Jo pour cold water on Laurie when he acted like Mrs Gummidge?

Thanks ??
