Passed gas in church

It was like my granddad had passed gas in church. My father's face pinched, his head shook, and finally he said, “Chet, what does that have to do with anything?”

I guess it's an idiom for doing sth surprisinly, but I don't find the exact meaning in my dict.

Dela It was like my granddad had passed gas in church. = It was as if my granddad had done something very embarrassing. People are supposed to be quiet in church, so it is very embarrassing to make a sudden loud sound there, especially when it comes from out of your own body (the part you sit on).
