Vocabulary

Passe and outmoded

.

Hi

Would you say that the underlined words are essentially synonymous? Do you find these sentences natural?

  1. This dress is a bit outmoded/passe.
  2. Aren't rotary phones considered outmoded/passe in this era?
  3. I found her style of dressing rather outmoded/passe.
  4. Is the idea of marriage outmoded/passe to you?
  5. What's the point in arguing on such a(n) outmoded/passe subject?

Thanks,

Tom

Largely yes, though I would write "passé". While the meaning is essentially similar, "passé" can sound a bit more disparaging. In (5), I find "arguing about" more natural.
