Passage from BBC

World Series champions Boston have signed veteran pitcher Curt Schilling for one more year.
Schilling had a 9-8 record through the regular season and earned the Red Sox victory in game two of their four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies. The 40-year-old's contract expired at the end of the 2007 season and he had been eligible for free agency.
In 2004, he helped Boston to win their first World Series in 86 years, playing through the pain of a tendon injury.

I would like to ask any adviser here if using "has" is better than using "had" here. Please advise.
