Passage-doubt

The members of the House of Commons were unlikely to be
won over by appeals to Christian morality or human compassion: they “no more
dreamt of a seat in the House in order to benefit humanity than a child dreams of a
birthday cake that others may eat it.”

The first part means they were not looking forward to help
humanity anymore.
what does the second part(the comparison) mean?
