Pass or Present Tense

Hi,

In a conversation, a guy said: 'Yesterday, he realised 1 + 1 is/was equal to 2.'

Should that be is or was, since '1+1=2' is a fact.

Another question in general conversation. Is it possible to have both present and pass tenses to appear together in one sentence?

Thank you.

Of course. "I used to own a ZAZ car, now I have a Moskvich and I think I'll buy an Izh next year."
