Hello....

Is there any meaning difference between the two sentences below?

a. He passed by the house.

b. He passed the house by.

You don't get a contrast with "house". You pass by a house, not pass it by. But with a person you get a (slight) contrast.

She passed by me. ~ She walked along, straight ahead. I was standing near the path she was taking, so at one point during her walk she and I were close to each other. She kept walking, and I kept standing there. She and I don't necessarily even know each other.

The difference seems to be so subtle that I feel I need to put in some time to completly understand, if that is possible as a non-native.... And these kind of things don't appear in grammar books.

How about " 1. pass by the house" and " 2. pass the house by"?
