Party lines

Cutting across party lines, Indian lawmakers on Wednesday voiced their support for the Bharat Ratna, country's highest civilian award for cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Voices supporting awarding the honour to Tendulkar are growing with each passing day.
Joining the chorus were lawmakers from various political parties. Rahul Bajaj, Chairman of Bajaj Auto Limited and a lawmaker said Tendulkar's contribution to the sport made him deserving of the highest honors.

Please explain to me the emboldened parts.

I understand "cut across" means "different groups interested in the same matter" but I wonder what it means by "party lines" though I know "party" is a political group.

I understand it to mean that individual members are agreeing with individual members from other polictical parties about the award for Sachin Tendulkar. (I also agree with them). The 'party line' is the term given to policies made by that policitical party that they expect their members to echo.

Thank you Dave Phillip.
So could you please tell me what it exactly means when we put "cut across the party lines" together?

Cut across the party lines simply means that different political members have united (temporary) with members from other political parties over a common cause. - The 'party lines' have been ignored on this occasion.
