PARTS OF SPEECH IN ENGLISH

A part of speech is a category of words that perform similar grammatical functions. Another name for parts of speech is word classes: they are the groups into which English words are classified according to their functions in sentences. According to traditional grammatical theory, there are eight parts of speech, and they are as follows:

  1. Noun: Names a person, thing, place, or idea.
  2. Pronoun: Replaces a noun in a sentence.
  3. Verb: Indicates an action or state of being.
  4. Adjective: Describes a person or thing.
  5. Adverb: Describes or modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  6. Preposition: Shows a relationship.
  7. Conjunction: Joins words, phrases, or clauses together.
  8. Interjection: Expresses emotions.
