among

limb - bough - branch?

Hello, I usually separate them having in mind the example of a tree, but don't know if it's correct. Branch - A part of a tree that grows out from the trunk or from a bough Limb - A large branch of a tree Bough - A main branch of a tree Kind Regards, FCarv

I usually separate them having in mind the example of a tree, but don't know if it's correct.

Branch - A part of a tree that grows out from the trunk or from a bough
Limb - A large branch of a tree
Bough - A main branch of a tree

Generally speaking, "branch" would be the smallest - would not support a person's weight; "limb" would be the next largest - would support a person's weight, but just barely (this is where the expression "out on a limb" comes from); "bough" would be the largest - no problem with supporting weight, a treehouse could be built on it. However, in the US, you don't hear "limb" and "bough" used in ever
