participle vs. gerund

At first, I'd like to wish you all Happy New Year! I hope it would be better than the previous regardless how good the previous was:)

And here is the question:
which one of these is participle and which gerund?
melting point X melting snow

Could anyone post some rules how to distinguish whether it is gerund or participle ?
