Participle vs. Adjective
Hello.
a) The sound of [the ringing bell] woke him.
b)He gave me [ a long, lingering look]
I am supposed to identify the syntactic class of the premodifiers of the noun phrases in brackets.
The solutions say that 'ringing' is a participle while 'lingering' is an adjective.
my question is now: Why? Aren't they both participles that just function as adjectives?

anonymous109 Why? Because the bell is really ringing. It's shaking about (or something is striking it) and making that particular sound.

- On the other hand, a person may linger in a place because he doesn't want to leave, but a look can't do that.
- A look has no brain to think such things as "I don't want to leave".

Most of the time, as I understand it, you ask if the noun is doing the action of the -ing
