Participle phrase with and without a comma

Hi guys,

Just to clearify my understanding of these two sentences.

1. Jack hurt himself trying to impress her. (When Jack tried to impress her, he hurt himself, accidentally.)

2. Jack hurt himself, trying to impress her. (Jack intentionally hurt himself to impress her.)

OR, the two simply mean the same.

Thank you.
