Participle phrase or second verb phrase?

I am eating fewer calories, trying to go for a lean body.

I am eating fewer calories and trying to go for a lean body.

Is this an example of a situation where a participle phrase works better than a compound predicate because it is one idea elabourated, rather than two separate ideas?

Thanks

They remain two separate ideas; it is just a matter of presentation. Nonfinite clauses are generally better style.
