participle phrase?

I want to make a sentence that express mother's feeling of sending her son to another city for university. She feels sad.

Can I say like this?

I feel sad, thinking that you're leaving.

I think this sounds better:

I feel sad when I think that you're leaving.


You can consider these as well:

I feel sad that you are leaving/ are going to leave.

ah.. ok. You mean my sentence is grammatically okay but doesn't sound good?
I was just wondering why whenever I make a participle phrase, it doesn't sound that good?.?.
