Participle clauses

Hi..
"http://focus.psychiatryonline.org/article.aspx?Volume=2&page=558&journalID=21#White-etal-1994 further identified subtypes of impulsivity, finding that behavioral, but not cognitive, impulsivity was related to antisocial behavior."

1)Participle clauses show a cause-effect relationship between the two related clauses, right?

2)Why is a participle clause used above?

Top answer

1-- Not necessarily. This one merely elaborates on the statement in the main clause, it seems to me, since identifying subtypes and finding relationships are two independent endeavors. 2-- It is one way of expressing it, that is all; perhaps a style choice.

The statement was:

"http://focus.psychiatryonline.org/article.aspx?Volume=2&page=558&journalID=21#White-etal-1994 further identified subtypes of impulsivity, finding that behavioral, but not cognitive, impulsivity was related to antisocial behavior."

As I said, it is not necessarily either.

White and colleagues identified... and White and colleagues found...
