Which sentence is correct, and why?

1. Growing up in a rural area, they had never experienced big-city life.
2. Grown up in a rural area, they had never experienced big-city life.

I think the correct sentence is (1) because "grow up" means development of a child. Therefore, "grow up" doesn't use in passive voice.

I am not happy with either one.

In the first sentence, the past perfect "had never experienced" does not go with "growing". I would expect "Growing up in a rural area, they never experienced big-city life." In other words, in the process of growing up there, they never lived in the city.

Growing up is better, but Having grown up even better (to my ear).
