PARTICIPLE

Diesel engines burn as much as 30 percent less fuel than gasoline engines of comparable size, as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gases that have been implicated in global warming.

Why as well as emitting .. Is it a participle phrase or a prepositional phrase? ..

Well, I see it as an adverb phrase because it means what does to do in addition to burn.

That is I see as well as having to do something with the verb and that is why i think it is an adverb phrase.

I did check it with Clive. He thinks the same.

However with regard to identifying the headword of the phrase, I am not certain about it. I need to do a deep
