Participial construction

Hi, teachers. Could you help me?

Which is correct?:

The show, being held this weekend, features some 136 exhibitors.

The show, held this weekend, features some 136 exhibitors.

I think both are correct, but I'm wondering if the first sentence has the implication of the present progressive. My thoughts are correct?

They are odd unless the clause is restrictive (no commas). Only the first makes temporal sense: The show being held this weekend features some 136 exhibitors. If you do not wish to be restrictive, it really needs a finite clause: The show , which is being held this weekend , features sme 136 exhibitors.

Thank you for your reply. "being" is necessary? "The show held this weekend features some 136 exhibitiors." is wrong?

Yes, 'held' with no other supporting verb is past, it refers to a finished showing. This would be OK if the show were over: "The show held this weekend featured some 136 exhibitors."
